How to Choose a Flatbed Semi Trailer

Axle count, deck length and twist lock positions decide whether a flatbed fits your cargo — here is how to pick.

Start with the cargo, not the trailer. If you carry 40ft containers, you need 12 twist locks and a 12.4 m deck. If you carry steel coils, you need a reinforced deck and lashing points, not twist locks.

Axle count follows the road law where you operate, not the payload you want. A 3-axle flatbed is rated 40–60 t in most markets; a 2-axle version keeps you legal where axle limits are strict but caps the payload.

Finally, check the tare. Every 500 kg of tare is 500 kg of payload you cannot carry, and on a 40 t limit that is 1.25 % of your revenue per trip.
